Where to put it

Window boxes, borders or a bright windowsill indoors.

Very adaptable: copes with partial shade through to full sun.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly moist, letting the surface dry between waterings.

About the plant

Small, with glossy, waxy-looking leaves in green or bronze, and white, pink or red flowers. It flowers almost all year and is widely used in beds and pots. It is usually 20 to 30 cm tall.

Origin

A hybrid of species native to Brazil and neighbouring countries, from humid woods and forest edges.

What it likes

  • Morning sun or partial shade
  • Moist, free-draining compost
  • Moderate warmth

What it dislikes

  • Soggy compost
  • Frost
  • Strong afternoon sun in summer

Did you know?
