Very adaptable, from partial shade to full sun.

Watering

Water only when the compost is bone dry; once a month is often enough in winter.

About the plant

The cylindrical snake plant has round, hard, pointed leaves that grow upright from the soil. It is a cousin of the snake plant and just as tough. It is often sold with its leaves braided.

Origin

Native to Angola in south-west Africa, where it grows in dry, stony areas.

What it likes

  • Medium to strong light
  • Very infrequent watering
  • Sandy, free-draining compost

What it dislikes

  • Soggy compost
  • Frequent watering in winter
  • Pots without drainage

Did you know?

Its leaves are cylindrical to reduce water loss, an adaptation to dry regions.
