Care

Where to put it

A bathroom, bedroom or shelf away from radiators.

Light

Partial shade to bright indirect light. One of the easier ferns.

Watering

Water when the top of the compost is dry. Tolerates drier air than most ferns.

About the plant

The blue star fern has deeply cut leaves in an unusual blue-green shade. Its hairy, golden rhizomes creep over the compost. It is one of the most tolerant ferns to grow at home.

Origin

Native to tropical and subtropical America, from Florida to Argentina, where it grows on palms and trees.

What it likes

  • Bright indirect light
  • Slightly moist compost
  • Moderate humidity

What it dislikes

  • Direct sun
  • Burying the rhizomes
  • Waterlogging

Did you know?

The bluish tone comes from a waxy layer on the leaves, which helps reduce water loss.
